In case you had no idea what I do here...

I do lots and lots of outreach. Lots. and Lots. This year, working for the Beijing Institute of Education, my life is outreach. demo lessons, teacher trainings, more demo lessons, observations, more trainings. I write lots of highlights that get sent off to the Regional English Language Office at the embassy. So far I have given a lesson in front of over 500 students and worked with over 100 teachers. It's pretty cool, especially when they use what I've shown in their own classes. To give you a sense of what i'm up to these days, here are some snippets!

Oct 27- I gave a demonstration lesson in the Pinggu district, a rural suburb of Beijing. By adapting the textbook reading materials, We discussed pre-reading, while reading and post-reading activities and there was further discussion of Western and Chinese pedagogy.

Oct 26- I provided two demonstration lessons on in a rural 8th grade Chinese English class at Zhongtan Middle School in Changping. By adapting the textbook reading materials, I exposed both students and teachers to a more student-centered, interactive and communicative classroom environment.  After the demo lesson, I explained my reasons and methods for teaching, followed by a workshop on using games in the classroom.

Oct 20- I visited Xing Hua high school in Daxing district to train 20 secondary school Chinese English teachers. The topic was vocabulary development in the Chinese English classroom, focused especially on vocabulary during reading lessons. Interactive, student-centered strategies were discussed.

Oct 13- I presented two day-long teacher trainings on the use of drama in the English language primary school classroom. After observing two classes, I provided important feedback for the Chinese English teachers and offered ways to use best practices within the drama classroom. I also presented a two-hour long workshop each day on ways to integrate drama activities into reading, writing, speaking and listening lessons. Attending teachers were given time for collaborative group work and reflection.

Week of Sept 23- I visited four different Beijing public schools this week as part of my ongoing fellowship the Beijing Institute of Education to demonstrate best practices in the primary and secondary English language classroom. Visits were made to top, key schools as well as to rural schools in need. After each demonstration, I met with the English language teaching staff to analyze the lesson and discuss ways to adapt their lessons and textbooks to include active, collaborative and creative methods to teach all four modalities of English. (over the course of the week; Rose met with 38 teachers, 6 teacher researchers, total of 230 number of students
